Chorionic villus samplingA procedure for first-trimester prenatal diagnosis. Abbreviated CVS. CVS may be done between the eighth and tenth weeks of pregnancy. The aim is to diagnose severe abnormalities that are present in the fetus. Tissue is withdrawn from the villi of the chorion, a part of the placenta, and then prepared for diagnostic analysis.

Chorionic villus sampling(kor-ee-on-ik vill-us) A technique for diagnosing genetic and congenital defects while the fetus is in the uterus. A small sample of the fetal portion of the placenta is removed and analyzed.

Chorionic villus samplingA prenatal test that examines the tissue that attaches the fetus to the wall of the uterus. If indicated, usually performed between 10–12 weeks of pregnancy to detect certain birth defects.

Chorionic villus samplingA type of prenatal testing that can be done as early as the 10th week of pregnancy. CVS can detect SMA in a fetus, but is associated with a risk of miscarriage that may be as high as 1 in 100.

Chorionic villus samplingGenetic testing of a tiny tissue sample from outside the sac where the fetus develops.

Chorionic villus samplingA prenatal test in which cells surrounding an embryo are removed in order to examine the chromosomes.
